Caves are important roosts for bats in karstic areas and play a critical role in the protection of bat populations. In the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in northeastern Brazil, cave-dwelling bats are poorly studied. Moreover, the state contains more than 900 caves, mainly in the Caatinga biome, that may offer important roosts for local bat populations. Thus, to gain a first insight into the richness, diversity, and colony size of cave-bats in the state, we sampled 13 caves through active search and captures with mist nets. Sixteen species from five families were recorded, and the biggest colonies belonged to Pteronotus gymnonotus and Phyllostomus discolor. Furna Feia cave was the richest, with 10 species. Our results showed that Rio Grande do Norte is home... |

We provide information on distribution, shelter use, food consumption, and reproductive biology of the nectar-feeding bat Xeronycteris vieirai. Six adult bats were mist netted near the caves and bromeliad Encholirium splendidum in a transition area between Caatinga and Cerrado biomes in Brazil. Bats were leaving the caves and were observed feeding on that bromeliad species. Our results suggest that distribution of X. vieirai may not be restricted to the Caatinga, but may occupy the entire Brazilian semiarid macroregion. Echolirium splendidum is an important resource for bats in karstic regions and its distribution might be related to the distribution and reproduction of X. vieirai. |

Home range size and habitat use of seropositive Oryzomys palustris, primary host for the Bayou strain of hantavirus, were compared to that of seronegative individuals from March 2002 - August 2003 in a longitudinal field population study. There were significant macrohabitat associations with serological status, but selection for most microhabitat variables did not differ between seropositive and seronegative animals. Seropositive adult males moved farther (had larger home ranges) than did seronegatives and were larger in terms of mass and testes size. These patterns may reflect the influence of infection on rodent ecology in terms of dominance and access to preferred habitats. |

The Cerrado extends as islands or patches into the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest (UPAF) of Brazil and Paraguay. This study evaluates the temporal dynamics of a marginal terrestrial small-mammal community in an isolated Cerrado patch within the UPAF, at the southwestern distributional limit of the Cerrado and near the western limit of the UPAF in eastern Paraguay. Because the faunal members of marginal communities are living near the limits of their capabilities in terms of their abiotic and biotic environment, the communities in such areas are likely to be a mixture of Cerrado and UPAF species, sensitive to extrinsic variables such as climate change and anthropogenic changes in land use. In this 23-month study, temporal dynamics of a terrestrial... |
